Brake work is where the industry earned its reputation, because “you need brakes” is unfalsifiable. A pad measurement isn’t. New pads start around 10 to 12 millimeters. Replacement is generally warranted around 3. Anything in between is a conversation about your driving, not a demand.

Friction material is engineered against a specific vehicle weight, rotor metallurgy and expected operating temperature. Low-cost pads hit the price by using a harder compound, and a harder pad eats the rotor it rides on. You save on the pads and buy rotors a year early.
They also matter for noise. Most brake squeal complaints after a cheap pad job come down to the compound, not the installation.

A Trax and a Silverado HD do not use the same brakes. Truck and full-size SUV components cost more because they’re stopping considerably more weight.

See current brake pricingAlmost any shop can replace brake pads. The work isn’t difficult, which is exactly why brakes became the default upsell across the industry: the customer can’t verify the claim, the fear is real, and the job is quick. That dynamic is why a lot of people assume they’re being worked when a shop mentions brakes at all.
The counter to it is measurement. Pad thickness and rotor thickness are numbers with published specifications, and either your vehicle is near them or it isn’t. We report both, we tell you which corner is worst, and we tell you when something can wait — because a customer who gets told “you’re fine, see you in six months” is a customer who comes back for the job that actually needs doing.
The dealer-specific part is everything electronic. Electronic parking brakes have to be retracted with a scan tool before a caliper will accept new pads. ABS and stability control faults need factory data to diagnose. Some Chevrolets require a brake pad life monitor reset, and a truck with the integrated trailer brake controller has calibration that a generic tool won’t touch.
Sanger calls itself the gateway to Kings Canyon, and that’s not just a slogan for the brake system. A run up 180 into the park means a long, sustained descent on the way home, and long descents are where brakes actually get destroyed — not in stop-and-go traffic, but from heat that never gets a chance to shed. Fluid that has absorbed moisture boils, the pedal goes soft near the bottom, and pads glaze over.
Add a trailer and it compounds. Between the mountain traffic and the ag hauling around Sanger, we see more heat-related brake wear here than the mileage on the odometer would predict. If you tow or run the canyon regularly, brake fluid condition matters as much as pad thickness, and it’s the thing most people have never had checked.
At every visit, and you shouldn’t have to ask. Brakes are part of the multi-point inspection that comes with every service here, including an oil change, so you get a thickness reading a few times a year without booking anything extra.
Anywhere from 25,000 to 70,000 miles, which is a range wide enough to be useless as a prediction. Towing, hills, city driving and how you use the pedal matter far more than mileage. The measurement is the only real answer.
No, and anyone who says always is selling. If the rotors measure above GM’s minimum thickness and the surface is in good condition, pads alone are fine. If they’re below spec, resurfacing isn’t legal or safe and they need replacing. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in.
Probably not urgent, but it’s information. A steady high-pitched squeal that goes away when you press the pedal is typically the wear indicator doing its job. A grinding noise is a different matter and shouldn’t be driven on.
Yes. Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air over time, and moisture lowers the boiling point. It’s why a pedal can feel fine around town and go soft at the bottom of a long grade. Check your owner’s manual for your interval.
A straightforward pad replacement is usually a comfortable wait with an appointment. If rotors, calipers or hydraulic work are involved, plan on leaving it. We’ll tell you which it is once we’ve measured, before any work starts.
